Heading to Canada's North — and This Time It's a Solo Adventure

Plus more misadventures from our early days of travel

In just a few days I’ll be heading off on a solo adventure with many personal firsts. It will be my first time going to the province of Manitoba. It also will be my first time visiting a First Nations reserve. And it will most certainly be a first for helping a non-profit organisation with a spay-and-neuter campaign to address dog overpopulation in the local community.

As you might imagine, this is promising to be a rather rustic trip. Upon arriving in Winnipeg, our team of volunteers will be hopping in a van and heading five hours north to a remote community — in fact, the furthest north that I’ve ever been in Canada.

Days will be spent helping with the spay-and-neuter clinic; at night we’ll be camping on air mattresses in the local elementary school. I’m still waiting to hear whether showers will be available (fingers crossed for that one).

The adventure recap continues

If you enjoyed reading about the ups and downs of our first year of nomad living, the next instalment is now live on our blog

Final moments of calm in Malta before our stressful return to Canada

Sadly, the second year of our travels started with a desperate scramble to get back to Canada at the height of the pandemic. After dealing with a family tragedy, it took many months until we were ready to pack our suitcases once again and resume a life of travel.

Here’s what else you can expect in our year two recap:

  • Loving Belgrade but wishing that we picked any time of year other than August

  • Booking a challenging group trek as a party of four: two humans and two poodles

  • Discovering that there’s no place quieter than a Mediterranean beach town in the offseason

  • Arriving in stylish Valencia, Spain with only the clothes on our backs

Thrilled to be reunited with our luggage in Valencia

That’s it for our August update. Coming to you in next month’s newsletter: It’s our long-awaited return to Southeast Asia and we couldn’t be more excited to rediscover this region that has a special place in our hearts. We’re heading off for a month in Thailand and the itinerary is a mix of old favourites and new finds. More details to follow but keep an eye on our Instagram for the latest updates.

See you on the road,

Stephanie & Gillian
