Travel is Suddenly a Lot More Expensive

Plus who’s ready for an adventure in 2024?

This month’s newsletter catches us right in the middle of our much-anticipated rest stop in Toronto. Even though we don’t technically have a home, we still have a hometown with friends and family and familiar neighbourhoods to enjoy.

After four years of travel, we’re finding that we need at least two or three visits back home each year to recuperate from being perpetual tourists. And we’re not just talking weekend visits; these are nice, long stays of a month or more.

This gives us time for happy events like celebrating holidays with family along with the more mundane, including finally getting our well-worn passports renewed.

It also gives us ample time for digging into our new pet topic: the rising prices of absolutely everything.

As much as we were surprised by the inflation we saw in Europe — our expensive apartment in Budapest springs to mind — we’ve been absolutely floored by what we’re encountering here in Canada. Everything from a loaf of bread to dining out to a gym pass costs an exorbitant amount. Don’t even ask what we paid for our Toronto Airbnb. 😅

Making time for money talk

Speaking of finances, we’re excited to be participating again in the upcoming Canadian Financial Summit, taking place on October 18th to 21st.

This free conference is perfect for anyone looking for actionable advice on saving, investing, earning and retiring early. The impressive speaker roster includes favourite bloggers like Early Retirement Now, Modern FImily and Money We Have along with many other experts.

For our part, we’re sharing how inflation has affected our lifestyle along with our very best tips for enjoying travel without breaking the bank. Click here to get your free ticket.

Our new favourite destination

Before we head off to the next country — and you’ll know what it is if you saw our recent Q&A 😉 — let’s give a fond farewell to Romania and to the city of Brasov in particular.

There were a lot of highlights to our summer but certainly Brasov turned out to be the winner in terms of the variety of experiences along with the low cost compared to the rest of our European stays.

We found Brasov to be the ideal spot for a create-your-own-adventure type of getaway. We were there for a month and enjoyed great hiking, traditional meals, all the castles we could want, and a lovely Airbnb that was one of the very cheapest in the past four years of travel.

You get all the details in the very last instalment from our European adventures, whether you watch the video or read about it on our blog

Ready for your next adventure?

I’m finally ticking off one of my dream trips: an exciting trek in Jordan. It includes an epic five-day hike from the Dana Nature Reserve to Petra — what the National Geographic describes as one of the world’s best hikes — plus camping with the Bedouins in Wadi Rum and floating in the Dead Sea.

I’m going as part of a small-group tour run by Experience Jordan and there’s room for more to join. If you’re interested, you can click here to learn more and book the March 9th departure directly with the tour company.

And that’s it for our October update. The next time you hear from us, we’ll be settling into an all-new country.

See you on the road!
